With the increased influx of patients for elective surgeries, top hospitals in the capital are running out of beds. Hospitals are witnessing a sudden surge in elective surgery such as joint replacement, spine surgery, plastic surgery, etc which was being delayed due to the pandemic.

A bureaucrat stated that recently his father who was diagnosed with prostate gland issues also developed a urinary tract infection. On the doctor’s advice, he tried to admit his father to the hospital. However, he was informed that there were no beds available despite being ready to shell out any amount of money. After many calls, he managed to get a bed.

The heads of Indraprastha Apollo, Aakash Healthcare, Fortis group, Max Healthcare, and Manipal Hospitals confirmed that they are working at full capacity. Dr. Anupam Sibal, Apollo Hospitals stated that before the pandemic, they were performing 50-60 surgeries per day which went over half during the pandemic times. However, now they have reached the pre-pandemic numbers. He also added that there are hardly any beds available except for the ones reserved for post-operative care and emergency cases. Dr. PP Singh, PSRI Hospital stated that the surge has certainly caused a strain on the infrastructure however it is manageable. But if the covid cases go over into warranting hospitalization, that will put an extra burden on the healthcare system.
